Church Tragedy

Many of you might have heard on the news about a shooting that occurred at First Baptist Church of Maryville, IL. What you may not know is that this church is located approximately 1 mile from the church I am a member of, Copper Creek Christian Church. This incident is a tragedy in that a wonderful man, husband, father, friend and minister was shot and killed, and we are still unclear as to whether or not there was a motive. However, it appears as though this was a random act, as the suspect does not appear to have an affiliation with the church. With this in mind, it becomes frightening to think that this incident could have happened at Copper Creek.

Things could have been a lot worse. I laugh as I listen to the news anchor sharing reports of the story: "...Normally this worship service sees approximately 250 on a given Sunday. But for some reason, today there were only 100 parishoners present during the shooting." For some reason? You really can't figure that one out? Also, the gun jammed after the fourth shot. The suspect was loaded with additional ammunition, plus a knife. Although the motive is unknown, it is clear that this man had intentions of doing a lot of damage. Thanks to the quick-thinking of two church members who tackled the guy (and did get injured themselves), potentially many more lives were saved.

Today I ask that you keep the family of Pastor Winters and the members of First Baptist in your prayers. Also, pray for the suspect and his family. There are a lot of questions that may never be answered. We cannot jump to conclusions as to why this happened, and play the blame game, as it will do nothing for us. Forgiveness needs to be extended to this man, and we need to pray for him. This incident is a great reminder that the devil is very present in this world. He thinks that he had a victory yesterday, with the death of a strong ministers. But what the devil doesn't understand is the mercy and grace that God grants, and that Pastor Winters is indeed in heaven.

It will be interesting to see what comes out of this event, and I believe with great certainty that it will be nothing but positive. God uses all sorts of events to move His Kingdom forward, and this will be no different. I am excited to see the great things that will come out of the church, the Maryville community, and other communities as a result of this event.
